Boehringer-Ingelheim releases a 0.1 billion euro expansion plan in China

The world’s biggest family enterprise, German pharmaceutical giant Boehringer-Ingerlheim, announced in Shanghai that the group will launch a 0.1 billion euro investment plan in the China market. According to this plan, the group is enlarging the productivity of its plant in Zhangjiang Industrial Park which should be able to meet the needs of the Chinese and other Asian markets before 2010. In addition to its current product lines in the cardiovascular, respiratory and central neural system categories, the group will introduce new drugs focusing on future diseases with high prevalence, including cancer and diabetes.
Meanwhile, the group is also expanding its business in the field of animal healthcare. It plans to invest 40-50 million dollars to set up a plant for animal healthcare products to build R&D centers for research on vaccines for animal diseases which are prevalent in China.

More traditional drugs of minorities should be included in the health insurance system

The 17th Party Congress “supports the development of Traditional Chinese Medicines and those from minorities” in its report. This year the central government’s work report includes the goal to “design and implement actions to support the development of Traditional Chinese Medicines and those from minorities.” Considering the weaknesses of this industry, Bao Zhiyi, a CPPCC member, suggested to provide equal treatment to minority hospitals in terms of free medical services and fixed-point health insurance services, and also to include more drugs from minorities in the health insurance system. These steps will create a favorable environment for the development of traditional medicines.

China calls for more efforts in reproductive health

Senior Chinese legislator Chen Zhili Sunday called for further increase in investment on reproductive health and enhanced cooperation when addressing the Fifth Asia-Pacific Conference on Reproductive Health.Chen said China has put more efforts in legislature ensuring citizens' rights in reproductive health, in expanding free and quality services in both urban and rural areas, and in rewarding rural residents who abide by the family planning policy.

China cut prices for about half essential drugs

China will cut prices for about 45 percent of its essential drugs by 12 percent on average on Oct. 22, said the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) Friday. The price reform this time will involve 296 kinds or 2,349 specific medicines and influence about 3,000 medicine producers.

China to store 26 mln A/H1N1 flu vaccine shots before late October

China will have reserves of 26 million A/H1N1 flu vaccine shots by the end of October, according to a news briefing jointly held by the Ministry of Health (MOH) and the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Beijing Wednesday. The number is expected to increase to 100 million when the country finishes its second phase of production and reservation.

Sinopharm IPO raises maximum sought amid $114 billion of orders

Sinopharm Group Co., China’s largest drug distributor, raised the maximum HK$8.73 billion ($1.13 billion) sought in a Hong Kong initial public offering. The company sold shares at HK$16 apiece, the top end of a range marketed to investors. The Hong Kong part of the sale drew HK$500 billion of demand, or 570 times the equity offered. Sinopharm’s IPO values it at 25 times forecast 2010 earnings, almost double the ratio for McKesson Corp., the largest U.S. drug seller. It attracted buyers including the Government of Singapore Investment Corp.

China says traditional medicine effective on A/H1N1 flu patients

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) had proved effective for preventing and curing A/H1N1 flu in clinical tests, Beijing health authorities said Wednesday. Currently the city has reserved 2 million TCM doses to fight against the flu. As to Sep 1rt, 326 of 845 confirmed cases of A/H1N1 in Beijing had been cured with TCM treatments.

China’s health care has undergone enormous changes after 60 years of efforts. In 2008, the country had 278,000 health institutions, more than 6,000,000 medical staff, 2.8 beds per thousand people, 600,000 village clinics, about 900,000 village doctors. Also, China's pharmaceutical and medical device industries have been increasing at 16% rate of growth every year since 1978. In 2007, the national pharmaceutical industry output value reached 667.9 billion RMB and medicine export rose to 24.6 billion USD. Various types of social security systems, including the new rural cooperative medical care system, have covered more than 1 billion urban and rural residents.
